Kinabalu Shell Press Awards Update

THANK YOU ... The Sabah State Government's support to the media fraternity in the state continues when Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the sponsorship of RM40,000 from the State Government for the Kinabalu Shell Press Award.

Seen here Musa (right) handing over a placard in a symbolic presentation of the sponsorship to Sabah Journalists Association President Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who is also chairman of the Kinabalu Shell Press Award organising commitee (left) after leading the organising committee to pay a courtesy call to the Chief Minister at his official residence in Sri Gaya.

On hand were organising committee members comprising Shell Sabah Corporate Affairs and Communication Manager, Datin Lucy Irene Yong (third from right), organising committee secretary, Victor Klanang (second from left), SJA committee members and a representative from Kota Kinabalu Journalist Association.

Earlier on, Musa told the organising committee members that the State Government viewed highly of the media in Sabah, hence its continuous support to the annual Kinabalu Shell Press Awards.

Kinabalu Shell Press Awards, is a tripartite collaboration between SJA, Shell and the Sabah State Government that aims to recognise journalistic excellence and to further enhance the standard of journalism in the state.his year’s Kinabalu Shell Press Awards will see the inclusion of a new category for Best Entertainment Reporting, which is aimed at recognising the work of entertainment journalists in promoting the thriving musical and cultural scene in Sabah.

The new category offers a cash prize of RM1,500 to winners in the print and electronic media, as well as up to two merit cash prizes of RM500.

According to Bangkuai, the number of entries this year had also increased reflecting the recognition of the Sabah media fraternity to the event, which is open to full time journalists, photographers and producers from the print and electronic media in Sabah and Federal Territory of Labuan.

The organising committee had also decided that only works published in newspaper dailies or electronic media between 1 May 2009 and 31 December 2009 would be eligible for submission for this year's award.

Bangkuai said that for next year's award, entries will be for works published or broadcasted during the entire 2010 period, in line with Malaysian Press Institute practice.

During the brief courtesy call, Musa also gave his consent to be the guest-of-honour for this year's Kinabalu Shell Press Awards that would be held on July 9 in Kota Kinabalu.

This year would marked the eighth year Musa has attended the prestigious event for the media fraternity in Sabah.
